Test day is where your preparation pays off. The CELPIP Listening section runs for 47 minutes with no breaks, so logistics, mindset, and pacing are critical.
These instructions give you a minute-by-minute strategy to walk into the test centre confident and leave knowing you performed your best.
Pre-Test Logistics
Check your official invitation email and the CELPIP website for the exact arrival time required for your test. Most test centres require you to arrive at least 60 minutes before your scheduled time. We strongly recommend giving yourself even more time than that.
Check-in closes 15 minutes before the test starts. If you arrive after check-in closes, you will be denied entry with no refund and no opportunity to take the test. This is strictly enforced.
This Is Serious — Do Not Be Late
There have been many cases of test-takers arriving just a few minutes late and being turned away at the door. They lost their entire test fee — often $300 or more — with no refund, no reschedule, and no second chance. Do not let this happen to you. Plan to arrive early, account for traffic, transit delays, and parking time. Treat the arrival time as a hard deadline.
Bring valid photo identification as required by CELPIP. Check celpip.ca for current ID requirements before your test date. No bags, phones, or watches are allowed in the testing room. Secure them in the provided locker.
At the Test Centre
After check-in, you’ll store personal belongings in a locker and receive paper and a pen. The administrator will seat you at a computer station with headphones.
Before the test begins, you’ll have a chance to adjust your headphones and volume during a tutorial. Use this time fully. Do not rush through it.
Pro Tip
Play the tutorial audio at least twice. Adjust volume so you hear clearly without straining. This 2-minute investment prevents 47 minutes of frustration.
Listening Section Timing
The Listening section is the first section you’ll complete. It lasts approximately 47 minutes and consists of 6 parts with 38 total questions.
You cannot pause or replay audio. Each recording plays once, and you must answer all questions for that part before moving to the next.
No penalty for wrong answers. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers. Always answer every question, even if you have to guess. A random guess gives you a 25% chance. Leaving it blank gives you 0%.

- Part 1: 8 questions
- Part 2: 5 questions
- Part 3: 6 questions
- Part 4: 5 questions

Minute-by-Minute Pacing
- Minutes 0–1: Practice Task (unscored). Use this to settle in and confirm your headphones work.
- Minutes 1–9: Part 1 (Listening to Problem Solving). Read the instruction screen for context, take structured notes during the audio.
- Minutes 9–14: Part 2 (Listening to Daily Life Conversation). Focus on specific details: times, places, names.
- Minutes 14–20: Part 3 (Listening for Information). Map details to questions as you listen.
- Minutes 20–25: Part 4 (Listening to a News Item). Listen carefully for the main story and supporting details. All questions appear on screen after the audio ends.
- Minutes 25–34: Part 5 (Listening to a Discussion). Track multiple speakers and arguments.
- Minutes 34–42: Part 6 (Listening to Viewpoints). Track the single speaker’s viewpoints and reasoning.
Each part transitions automatically. If you finish early, mentally reset before the next audio begins. No time to review previous answers.
Mindset Strategy
Sustained focus for 47 minutes is challenging, especially under test pressure. Break the section into 6 mini-tests rather than one marathon.
After each part, take a 3-second mental reset: close your eyes, take one deep breath, and refocus. This micro-break prevents cumulative fatigue.
Pro Tip: The #1 Test-Day Habit
Treat every answer as final. Once you select it, forget it and move on. Dwelling on past questions destroys focus for upcoming audio.
When You Miss an Answer
You will miss answers. Every test-taker does. The audio moves fast, and replays aren’t allowed.
When you realize you’ve missed information, immediately:
- Make your best guess based on partial information or elimination.
- Move to the next question before the audio continues.
- Forget the missed question: focus forward, not backward.
Focus Killer
Thinking “I missed question 3” while question 4 audio plays guarantees you’ll miss question 4 too. Break the spiral immediately.
Energy Management
Test anxiety burns mental energy fast. Use these quick tactics to stay sharp:
- Breathe deeply during transition screens (5 seconds between parts).
- Sit upright to maintain alertness. Slouching reduces oxygen flow.
- Blink frequently to prevent eye strain from the screen.
- Stay hydrated before the test (but not so much you need a bathroom break mid-section).
Your brain uses 20% of your body’s energy. Eat a balanced meal 90 minutes before your test time: protein and complex carbs, not sugar.
Final Pre-Listening Checklist
Before the Listening section audio begins, verify:
Your Setup
- Headphones fit comfortably and volume is clear
- Notepaper and pen are within easy reach
- Screen brightness is comfortable (adjust if needed)
- You have used the restroom during the tutorial phase
- Your posture is upright and relaxed
Your Mindset
- You have reviewed question types mentally
- You are committed to the answer-and-move-on strategy
- You are treating this as 6 separate mini-sections
- You have accepted that some questions will be hard. That is normal
- You are ready to give 47 minutes of full focus
After the Listening Section
Once the Listening section ends, you’ll move immediately to the Reading section. There’s no official break, but you’ll have a few seconds during the transition.
Use this moment to stretch your shoulders, breathe deeply, and mentally shift gears. The Reading section has a different rhythm: slower, self-paced.
Pro Tip
Don’t mentally review your Listening answers during Reading. What’s done is done. Channel that energy into the section in front of you.
Your Test-Day Mindset
You’ve trained for this. Trust your preparation, execute your strategies, and stay present.
The test measures your current ability, not your worth. Walk in confident, knowing you have a plan for every moment of those 47 minutes.
Remember: Every CELPIP test-taker faces the same challenge: one audio play, no pauses. Your advantage is having a clear plan for every part, every minute, and every unexpected moment.
