Sample Prompt
Every step below reuses the same prompt so you can watch one scenario travel through the full template.
Prompt: Talk about a time when you had a memorable travel experience. Where did you go? What happened during the trip? Why was it memorable for you?
Step 1: Opening. Set the Scene
Goal: Establish when and where the experience happened, and give context. This should take about 10–15 seconds.
Grammar Booster: Simple Past for Completed Actions
Formula: Subject + Past Verb (V2) + Details
Use Simple Past for actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past. This is the backbone of any personal story.
Examples:
- About two years ago, I drove into the Canadian Rockies on a solo road trip.
- On the third morning of the trip, I decided to take a back road through the mountains.
- When my car broke down in the middle of nowhere, I experienced something unforgettable.
The Template
- Time marker: [Time expression], I [past verb]…
- Location/Context: I was in [place] because [reason].
- Hook: Something [unexpected/amazing/challenging] happened that [changed my perspective / taught me a lesson / I’ll never forget].
Example: About two years ago, I decided to take a solo road trip across British Columbia. I had always wanted to explore the Canadian Rockies, and I finally had a week off work. What happened on that trip completely changed how I think about travel.
Step 2: The Main Story. Describe What Happened
Goal: Tell the key events in chronological order using sequence markers and vivid details. This is the core of your response, about 35–40 seconds.
Grammar Booster: Past Continuous for Background Actions
Formula: Subject + was/were + Verb-ing
Use Past Continuous to describe background actions that were happening when the main event occurred. This creates a cinematic, layered narrative.
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| Past Continuous + when + Simple Past | I was driving through the mountains when my car suddenly broke down. |
| While + Past Continuous, Simple Past | While I was walking down the trail toward the village, I spotted a small community I hadn’t seen on the map. |
| Past Continuous for atmosphere | The sun was setting over the peaks, a stream was running nearby, and I was feeling completely stranded. |
Grammar Booster: Past Perfect for Earlier Events
Formula: Subject + had + Past Participle (V3)
Use Past Perfect to show that one event happened before another past event. This adds depth and sophistication.
Examples:
- I realized I had driven for hours without seeing another car.
- By the time help arrived, I had already waited for two hours.
- I had never met such generous strangers before.

I walked for about thirty minutes and found a tiny community where a local mechanic helped me fix the car. While he was working on it, his family invited me for dinner and shared incredible stories about living in the mountains.
Step 3: Closing. Reflect on the Experience
Goal: Share what you learned or how the experience affected you. Keep it brief, about 10 seconds.
Grammar Booster: Present Perfect for Lasting Impact
Formula: Subject + have/has + Past Participle
Use Present Perfect to connect the past experience to the present moment, showing its lasting impact.
