Frequently asked questions
What is CLB and why is it important?
Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is the Canadian standard for measuring English language proficiency. It's used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to assess language skills for immigration programs like Express Entry. Your CLB level directly determines how many CRS points you receive.
Which language test should I take?
For English: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, or PTE Core are accepted. CELPIP is computer-based and only in Canada, while IELTS is available worldwide. For French: TEF Canada or TCF Canada. Choose based on availability in your location and your comfort with the test format.
How long are test results valid?
Language test results are valid for 2 years from the test date for Express Entry applications. Make sure your results won't expire before you receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) or before you submit your permanent residence application.
Can I retake the test to improve my score?
Yes, you can retake language tests as many times as you want. There's no limit on retakes. Each point in your CRS score can make a significant difference, so improving your language skills is often the most effective way to increase your chances of receiving an ITA.
Do I need the same level in all four skills?
No, you don't need the same level in all skills. Each skill (speaking, listening, reading, writing) is assessed separately and contributes different CRS points. However, balanced scores across all skills will maximize your total CRS points.
What's the minimum CLB level for Express Entry?
The minimum CLB level depends on the program: Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) requires CLB 7, Federal Skilled Trades (FST) requires CLB 5 for speaking/listening and CLB 4 for reading/writing, and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) requires CLB 7 for NOC 0/A jobs or CLB 5 for NOC B jobs.
